New Year, New Houseplant! It’s time to pack away the last signs of the festive season and fill the empty spaces with new houseplants. The Secret Garden centre shop has been restored to its former jungle glory with an influx of new plants.
Monstera Variegata
These lovely Mostera have been on the market for the last couple of years but would set you back a pretty penny. We held off buying them as they just seemed too expensive. The prices now seem far more reasonable and we will stock them as often as possible.
Light: Bright, indirect light.
Water: Allow the top two inches of soil to dry between watering.
Humidity: Mist frequently or introduce a humidifier to your home.
Soil & Fertiliser: Repot into houseplant compost, adding chunky orchid bark for soil structure and moisture retention. Fertilser with a houseplant fertiliser every 2-4 weeks from March to September.

Aglaonema ‘Eyecatcher’
This Aglaonema has the perfect name. The beautiful pink colour variations on the glossy leaves make this plant a real show-stopper. They are drought-tolerant, hardy, and low-maintenance. What’s not to like!
Light: Low to bright light. Keep away from direct light.
Water: Water weekly during the hot summer months. Allow the soil to dry by 50% before watering for the rest of the year.

Cymbidium Orchids
These orchids are much larger than the typical Phalaenopsis Orchid and easier to care for. They have long, sword-like leaves that look good even when there are no flowers. Large ball-like buds form on tall stems and open to thick, waxy, long-lasting flowers in deep colours. White, yellow, orange, pink, or purple flowers are the most common.

Tradescantia ‘Anouk’
These stunningly colourful tradescantias are easy to care for and ideal for growing in a hanging pot or on a shelf. The leaves are mainly white with stripes of purple and green that look amazing when the light shines through. If your spot is too shaded the leaves will turn more white.

Peperomia ‘Burning bush’
This glossy green leaved plant is extremely low maintenance and drought tolerant. Thick waxy leaves form a compact plant that is ideal for sitting on a coffee table, table, side board or shelf.

What houseplant compost should i use?
Not all compost is the same and not all houseplants want the same compost. A healthy plant always starts with a good growing medium. We sell a good base houseplant compost at the Secret Garden centre. Houseplant focus is a good start for most houseplants but it can easily be amended to make it perfect for specific plants. Some plants may need a chunkier mix. You can do this by adding orchid bark. Some may need more moisture, sphagnum moss is perfect. Check out the RHS for more info.
